The Karaite Error Made Simple

Shabbat Shalom Yisrael,
Today is Day 2 of Month 1!!!

I’m encouraged to hear that many leaders within Yisrael are deciding to keep the Passover in the correct month this year!!! Praise YAHUAH! Often times it is hard to go against the majority…but we are told in the Scripture “So therefore also, at this present time a remnant according to the choice of favour has come to be.”~ Romans 11:5

Every year it seem that there is a little “calendar confusion” and 2016 has been no exception to the rule, however I believe this “Karaite Error” makes for a great teaching opportunity for those interested in the Truth instead of the traditions of men…

The picture below really sums up for me the Karaite Error, which involves looking in all the wrong places and at the wrong TIMES! They just can’t seem to figure out why their calendar doesn’t work…

Karaite Error Made Simple

To start off, we are told that the Passover is in the first Month:
On the fourteenth day of the first month between the evenings is the Passover of יהוה. ~Leviticus 23:5

Secondly, we are told that the “Month Abib” was the month of the Passover and the Exodus:
“Guard the month of Abib, and perform the Passover to יהוה your Elohim, for in the month of Abib יהוה our Elohim brought you out of Mitsrayim by night. ~Deuteronomy16:1

Please Note: that “Passover”, the “Month of Abib”, and the “First Month” are all interlinked!

So the FIRST MONTH is the MONTH of ABIB!!!

But many Karaites interpret Deut 16:1 את־חדש “the month” as the “the new moon” so they read…”Guard the new moon of Abib (Month 1)…”

It should be noted that the word חדש (chodesh) can mean “new moon” HOWEVER the first time we see חדש (chodesh) in Scripture (Gen 7:11) and most often times it is understood and translated as “month”.

There is a huge difference between “new moon” (which is Day 1 of a month) and “month” (which is Day 1 thru Day 29 or Day 30 of a month)

The (((CONTEXT))) of Deuteronomy 16:1 is clearly Month and NOT new moon…because

Question: Was Passover on a new moon? Answer: NO!
Question: Did Yisrael leave Mistrayim (Egypt) on a new moon? Answer: NO!

So let’s re-look at Deuteronomy 16:1 with a proper understanding of the word חדש (month).
“Guard the MONTH of Abib, and perform the Passover (Day 14 of Month 1) to יהוה your Elohim, for in the MONTH of Abib יהוה our Elohim brought you out of Mitsrayim by night (Day 21 of Month 1). ~Deuteronomy16:1

As mentioned above “the Month of Abib” = Month 1

However the Karaites assess Month 12 for “abib barley”…

However the Scripture tell us that Month 1 is the Month of Abib…

Do you see a problem?

It is quite interesting that not only do they “look” for “abib barley” in the 12th Month, but they totally do not “look”, “assess”, “GUARD” Month 1??????
Only a tradition of man can be this dumb to look for something Yah said, would be in Month 1 in another month, then not look for that same thing in the Month Yah told us it would be there. (See picture above)

I could spend a lot more time pointing out all the errors of the Karaite Method like the word “abib” which they understand to be a certain type of ripe barley in a certain amount (which all this is in question and subjective)… But let us turn our attention from all the traditions and look briefly on How the Creator’s Righteous Cycles actually work.

In reality “abib” crop is really not that important in understanding the Creator’s Appointed times… “abib crop is just a symptom of the season.”

If you want to understand The Appointed Times you have to go back to the beginning:

genesis 1

It is the lights of the heavens (sun and moon) that determine signs, appointed times, days, and years.

Karaite error 2

The spring equinox is defined as the time when the apparent geocentric longitude of the sun (that is, calculated by including the effects of aberration and nutation) is 0 degrees.

It is at this Spring Equinox that the sun starts to “turn the corner” and directly influences the season. The Spring Equinox on the Gregorian Calendar is March 20.

According to the Scripture (Exodus 13:10) the Feast of Unleavened Bread must remain in the Spring season.
“You shall therefore keep this ordinance [the Festival of Unleavened Bread] in its season from year to year.” ~Exodus 13:10

Once you figure out when the new moon will be spotted you can then determine when the Feast of Unleavened Bread will take place, which is the Day 15 / Month 1. The new moon was spotted March 10, 2016 here is the calendar for this month:

Notice the Spring Equinox (March 20th) lands on the 10th Day of the Month.

Since the Spring Equinox starts the change in the season…

The Feast of Unleavened Bread is clearly within the SEASON of Spring According to Exodus 13:10.

The crop will definitely be ready by the Omer Wave Offering Date of Day 16 / Month 1 (Leviticus 23:10,11), which corresponds to March 26, 2016!

…Matter of fact, the confirmation is already in:

    1. Shalom Mark, Great Question! The Scriptures don’t come out directly and say “add a 13th month every 3 to 4 years.” Nevertheless, I believe YAHUAH was telling Moses that some type of observance and calculating would need to be done in order to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread in it’s proper season (spring) from year to year (Exodus 13:10). We know this because the solar cycle is 365 and the lunar cycle is 354 a 11 day difference… This means if we were to continually go strictly by a 12 month year followed the Month 1 eventually the Feast Unleavened Bread would end up in the Fall thus violating Exodus 13:10. So inter-calculation is necessary to observe the Feasts in their proper seasons from year to year! Blessings!!

  1. You don’t name the month of Abib until the green ears are ready not in anticipation of green ears being ready by a certain day. Beginning the month of Abib while it is still winter is no different that the pagan Gregorian calendar naming new years day inn the winter. According to your calculations the fall Feasts will be in the summer instead of the fall.

In the old days the people would have had to leave for Jerusalem to keep the harvest feasts before the harvest and by the time they returned home the harvest would be ruined in the fields. Good grief!

  2. Hello,

On the March 9th, the new moon was 1% visible. Isn’t this the new moon day? So isn’t everything one day off?

Also, Lev 23:10 is a Shabbaton, not a shabbathon. So isn’t the wave sheaf offering date specified wrong here? Shouldn’t it be March 27th?

    1. Shalom Darren,
The moon was impossible to see from Jerusalem on March 9, 2016.
The Omer Count starts from Day 16 / Month 1, which this year is March 26th.
I’ll be posting much more on this…because in order to understand the year and day of the Resurrection of Messiah, you need to know when the Omer Wave Offering would of occurred…

      1. Shalom Darrel,

For example the 15th day is a high sabbath day, no servile work. Strongs defines it as a miqra.
The wave sheaf is to be brought after the weekly Sabbath that falls within The Days of Unleavened Bread.
That word for Sabbath in Strongs is shabbath. So we know its the weekly Sabbath. Your thoughts?
